Blue Hour at Big Island
Since January 1983, Kilauea volcano has been continuously erupting via a lava vent Puʻu ʻŌʻō. First erupting approximately once a month with lava fountains up to 500 metres high, each of these eruptions were given an individual episode number. Now 34 years later these eruptions are still ongoing with episode number 61 which began in August 2011. Whenever lava flow takes a new route, it will be named with episode number and sequential alphabet.
Lava flow 61g has been active since late May 2016. Since then, lava flow has entered ocean on southern shore of Big Island.
When reaching ocean, lava flow with temperatures over 1000 degrees celsius boil the sea water, creating steam plumes filled with toxic gasses.
